Nakba
The catastrophe, a product of terrorism that wiped out entire villages, and forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to flee their land. They took with them keys to their homes, and hope that someday they would return.
The catastrophe, because the price they paid for crimes they did not commit is unimaginable.

this is a scanned photo of of women and children traveling across the city of amman in jordan (cir. 1965) escaping persecution from zionists. at the time and since the nakba in 1948, the region had seen an influx of more than 200,000 palestinian refugees.
i've manipulated and distorted this scan with rough textures and advertisements, as a reflection of the current situation in palestine. the american need for violence, consumption, and expansion. this is also reflected in the title as a bit of a double entendre. 'growth imperative' refers to capitalism's unsustainable need for continual growth - but also reflecting the need for humans to change and grow as they face the ever present reality that much of what we have been taught to believe about the world, is simply a lie designed to benefit our current economic archetype.
the faces of the women and children have been blacked out to represent the nearly 30k innocents who have been murdered by the israeli government. while this is an estimated number, it's likely that the true death toll far exceeds what is being reflected by the UN as there are still tens of thousands of people missing, starving, or subjected to the exposure of displacement from their homes.
this is the greatest humanitarian crisis of our lifetime it is a genocide
there is hope for change, represented by the array of flowers adorning the sky, and filtering the vast sprawl of the city.
but change starts with us and what we choose to prioritize
